News Release: Canada by the Book Heads to Dawson City
(Whitehorse) – While attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Advocacy Days in Ottawa last week, AYC President Diana Rogerson had the distinct pleasure of spreading good news to Dawson City last week. Rogerson noted, “It is wonderful to have a Yukon municipality receive the tremendous gift of Canada by the Books that our colleagues so generously provide.”
At each set of quarterly Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board meetings, eighty+ members bring a book of children’s literature (by an author from their region, or about their area) which are then collectively donated to an elementary school library in the community hosting the meetings. This donation acts as a “literary tapestry, or mural” of our country.
Traditionally, members deliver the books to the Board registration table and the books remain on display until the Friday morning Board meeting where the winning community is announced. Last week in Ottawa, a draw from all the FCM member municipalities that are too small to host a set of FCM Board meetings was held.  The Robert Service School in Dawson City is the lucky recipient.
Mayor Potoroka said, “On behalf of our community, I am thrilled to be able to bring a small part of the work of FCM home to our school, in such a tangible and thoughtful way.”
The books will be presented to Mayor Wayne Potoroka at the AYC Board meeting on December 2nd, and they will then be transported to the school.
