June 16, 2008 (Whitehorse, Yukon):
The Association of Yukon Communities will award two scholarships annually for municipal studies.
At its Annual General Meeting in April, the membership of the Association directed the establishment of two scholarships of $500 each for students of post secondary institutions who are studying towards a career in a municipal setting. Other eligible candidates are municipal staff and elected officials who are currently working for a municipality or an local advisory council.
The Past President of the Association and Mayor of Whitehorse, Bev Buckway, said: “We believe that the scholarships will promote the study of municipal affairs and benefit Yukon communities. The Association is already involved in partnership programs with the Department of Education to increase the capacity of local governments to provide for their residents and these scholarships will complement that effort”.
Currently the Association administers the Community Training Trust, which subsidizes training for elected officials and staff of First Nations and local governments, and manages a Northern Strategy Trust project, which is designed to develop capacity in First Nation and local governments. Partners in these programs are the Community Training Trust Society and the Department of Education.
