Clara Jules Receives Hanseatic Award

Whitehorse — The Village of Teslin’s Mayor Clara Jules is this year’s Hanseatic Award recipient. The award, sponsored by Skookum Asphalt, is AYC’s highest honor and was presented at the 42nd Annual Conference in Faro this past weekend.

The Hanseatic Award was established in 1997 to provide municipal leaders an opportunity to recognize the work of their peers. President Diana Rogerson noted the award is presented to "A person who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of Yukon municipal government and furthered the goals of the Association of Yukon Communities.

The AYC Municipal Employee Award of Excellence was claimed by Donna Istchenko of the Village of Haines Junction. This award, sponsored by Blue Imp, recognizes the contribution of an employee of a member community who has demonstrated an exceptional level of professionalism, leadership and innovation in his/her job.

The City of Whitehorse received the Yukon Sustainable Community Award, sponsored by Yukon Energy, for its work on organic certification for compost.

Vice-president Michael Riseborough noted the highest ever turnout of delegates, and decreed, "Despite its small size, Faro proved that events of this size can be comfortably managed, and AYC will continue to rotate the annual meeting among our municipalities." The annual conference is an opportunity for elected representatives and staff of all orders of government in Yukon to come together and discuss issues of common concern.

Next year’s event will be held in Dawson City.
